About this deal

On a surface reading, the likes of The Day That Never Comes, My Apocalypse and That Was Just Your Life are excellent songs, but they’re also forged in the image of ‘classic’ Metallica, by men uncertain of their relevance or purpose in the contemporary metal world. P on erratic, schizoid form as his Californian compatriots throw elements of ska, circus music, heavy metal, free jazz, and funk into a heady, experimental mix, sonic oddities like Slowly Going Deaf (a reckoning on the irony of wearing earplugs to listen to music) and Squeeze Me Macaroni (interpreting sex via food metaphors) are still capable of dropping jaws today. Goths have always liked a bit of a foray to the dancefloor and, while they might not have invented it, the Netherlands’ Clan Of Xymox pretty much defined the upbeat gloom of gothic rock’s electronica-loving little cousin darkwave. Setting aside the old occult influence in favour of a more socially-relevant purpose, tracks like Act Of Contrition and Psychosexuality tug on your conscience as well as melting your face.

From the mechanical assault of drum machine Doktor Avalanche, to the echoing guitars and Andrew Eldritch’s cadaverous vocals, there’s an otherworldly, unsettling quality to it all. The extent of Metallica’s direct musical influence on the grunge and alternative scene of the ’90s might be debatable, but there’s no doubting they kicked down a lot of doors, and, as Jason argues, provided a gateway not only to their own more aggressive back catalogue but to other more extreme bands and artists.

In Xmal Deutschland they had their own dark icons, but the band had to come to England first, playing shows in London and being championed by legendary DJ John Peel. Awards were purchased by Mixmag Media, publisher of dance monthly Mixmag, along with assets related to defunct style magazine The Face. One of the conditions of reforming the band in 1991, laid down by vocalist Ben Weasel, was that they moved towards a more Ramones-ish straight punk sound.

overtook NME as the biggest selling music weekly in the United Kingdom, bolstered by its coverage of nu metal. The radio output included interviews with those affecting popular culture and society as well as those involved with music. Despite misconceptions to the contrary, goth only rarely focuses on vampires and things that go bump in the night, more often getting philosophical and dwelling on the darkness of the human condition. In many ways, it’s a far cry from the despair that characterised the band’s celebrated debut album Disgusting, but the emotional impact is just as, if not more, profound.

That the album perplexed so many in the mid-’90s was almost certainly what Lars Ulrich intended, but history will remember Load warmly.

Last album Modern Mirror was a lot sparklier, but their second full-length was arch, dramatic and decidedly dark, revolving around the UFO suicide cult Heaven’s Gate. The record performed poorly, in commercial terms, on release, but the hazy easygoing and driving cool of tracks like Medicine and Zodiac Lung have stubbornly endured. Crucially, it sounds like Metallica believe in these songs, and are invested in them, which can’t be said for everything on its predecessor. It wasn’t just thrash crossing over into strange, experimental new territories, either, with Floridian tech-death heavyweights Atheist continuing to push their boundaries on second LP Unquestionable Presence. It's weird, because with [1987 covers EP] Garage Days Re-Revisited, it was other people's songs, but I loved the bass tone.

The line-up for each year was usually announced in October of the previous year and was held throughout January and February of the following year.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has revealed that The American Dream… was actually one of the last songs the band wrote for Saviors – but it left an instant impression on the trio (completed by bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool). Audiences were overwhelmingly on board, with the album going double-platinum in America, and becoming the first metal record to top the Billboard 200 in the Nielsen SoundScan era. Second release Smell The Magic was actually first dropped as a 12” EP on Sub Pop, featuring just six tracks in September 1990, but that was extended to nine for its broader LP pressing in July 1991.was launched as a regional radio station in Birmingham with an advertising campaign by London-based creative agency ODD. There are some misfires here, but much of Load is extraordinary, not least the magnificent The Outlaw Torn and the brooding Southern Gothic atmospherics of Until It Sleeps. Before analysing Lulu, it’s helpful to consider one simple question: would any other metal band have had the nerve to make such an album?
