Every time the Pelican spoke, the beak I was standing in jiggled madly up and down, and the more excited he got, the more it jiggled.

Perhaps because it’s pretty short so it’s hard to really get into a fall in love with the character. The Monkey is the one who cleans people's windows and he reaches the higher windows by climbing up the Giraffe's neck. On my next visit to The Grubber, I was standing across the road gazing at the wonderful old building when suddenly an enormous bathtub came sailing out through one of the second-floor windows and crashed right on to the middle of the road! When all the fourth-floor windows on that side of the house were finished, the Giraffe simply drew in her magical neck until the Monkey was level with the third-floor windows and off they went again. The Duke is ecstatic: In 40 years, he’s never gotten his windows clean, and now he can look through them and enjoy the view.

As soon as one window was done, the Giraffe moved the Monkey over to the next one and the Pelican followed. To the Duke, because the weather was a little chilly, I gave some Scarlet Scorchdroppers that had been sent to me from Iceland. Look over there, my dear Giraffey, and you will see the only plantation of tinkle-tinkle trees in the entire country! Then builders and carpenters moved in and rebuilt the whole of the inside so that once again it had three floors.

Although the story is narrated in first-person by Billy, the word 'me' in the title refers to the monkey, who concludes every verse of his signature song with the phrase 'the giraffe and the pelly and me'.I have heard of a fish-pie and a fish-cake and a fish-finger, but I have never heard of a fishmonger.
