I thought it didn’t work, I set the time gave it a few shakes and to my amazement it works perfectly! Sorry for the late response but WOW, thanks so much for sharing that story! It’s absolutely awesome that your father’s Seiko stood the test of time, though, can’t say I’m entirely surprised!

It doesn’t have any screws, or even pushpins, like most bracelets, so sizing it can be extremely difficult. The included bracelet isn’t the best, but with a watch so affordable, it’s easy to overlook, and this watch looks good on a variety of different straps if you can work around the odd 19mm lug width. For the money, I seriously doubt there’s any dial that comes even close to that level. And there probably isn’t. Availability Seiko 5 is Seiko’s entry-level mechanical line of watches. They look great, have a robust in-house mechanical movement and are some of the most affordable automatic watches one can buy.

Like most of the non-Sports models, this one is rated water-resistant to 30 m. Technically, it’s only splashproof. However, I’ve seen people submerge – even swim with – these watches, so I presume that it’s relatively safe to expose them to water. However, it all depends on whether you want to take your chances or not. Seiko understates the water-resistance of their cases. If that pattern extends to the 5s as well, you’re probably safe if you forget to take the watch off before going for a swim. As an ordinary precaution, I’d still advise protecting it from unnecessary risk. The bracelet It has a 37mm diameter like many Seiko 5 models and a very condensed 42mm lug to lug dimension. This means it’ll fit comfortably on most people’s wrists without hanging over the edge, even on those with smaller wrists. I think the brushing on the bracelet kind of looks out of place – like it doesn’t belong on this watch. Especially since there are absolutely no brushed surfaces on the case to tie the look together. That’s how I’m able to appreciate the value proposition of the SNXS79 so much more, this time around. In my experience Swiss watches are like German cars expensive to buy, expensive to maintain and no where near as reliable as Japanese cars, especially Toyotas and Suzukis.

We’re glad you dig this post! But first, please take a few moments to sign up as a member of our EDC community below. First released in 1996, the Seiko caliber 7S26 is one of Seiko’s most common automatic movements, found in many Seiko watches and divers and most of the Seiko 5 line. It’s a true workhorse and is highly regarded as one of Seiko’s most reliable movements. The Seiko 7S26 movement has powered the watches of military service members, deep-sea divers, and emergency responders for almost 30 years, which is all the testament you need regarding its durability and reliability. It’s also easy to repair and service, with parts widely available worldwide. On the applied hour marker indices and steel hands, you’ll find Seiko’s LumiBrite, which is Seiko’s new luminous material that is said to be brighter and longer lasting than conventional luminous paints. This helps you tell the time even when no light is available. I’ve heard claims that it’s made from a different steel alloy than the case. Sure, the brushed finish plus a lightweight folded link structure can give you that impression. However, without any evidence, the claim can’t be confirmed. The Seiko SNXS79’s bracelet is made from stainless steel and features a satin finish. What is the weight of the watch?

Most all of them feature a relatively prominent ‘5’ badge under the Seiko logo at the top. I used to think the badge was kind of… Over the top. And took up too much dial real estate. It doesn’t take much sunlight to charge it, either. Just a few minutes standing in direct sunlight and the lume will be fully charged and ready to go. Seriously, looks amazing.

The Seiko SNXS79K's case is waterproof for up to 30 meters. While not adequate for scuba diving, its 30m water resistance should withstand splashes and light precipitation. However, since its crown doesn’t screw down, swimming with the watch isn’t recommended. Seiko usually understates its cases' water resistance, so even if you forget to remove it when going for a swim, the watch should be fine, so long as you aren’t scuba diving or doing laps. However, in practice, it’s an excellent movement. The rotor action is quiet. Sure, you can hear it, but that’s that. A considerable advantage of this one is Seiko’s Magic Lever bidirectional winding system, first introduced in 1959. It’s simply a role model for winding efficiency. As someone I know spoke of the Seiko 5, you can just rest on the couch all day, and get up only when you need to, and it’ll still give that movement just enough motion of the rotor to keep it going. With its reliable mechanical movement, versatile design aesthetic, affordable price, and excellent build quality, there’s no wonder that the Seiko SNXS79Kfinds itself on the wrist of those looking for a great everyday wristwatch that looks right at home, whether as a casual everyday beater or worn as a dress watch for special occasions. The bit of extra height does help to add a touch of extra wrist presence, though not by much. 7S26 Movement

At the time, after wearing a dive watch for a couple of months, I thought the Seiko 5 looked too small and effeminate on me. It is a ‘smaller’ case size (37mm in diameter) and is maybe even smaller than average by modern day standards. The crown is small, but given that the movement doesn’t hand-wind anyway, you don’t need a bigger one. While some don’t like the fact that it’s recessed, it does wear comfortably. There’s just no way for it to dig into your wrist.
