Still, the precarious market is one factor that has led the Modern House to consider entering the rental market – offering a stepping stone, perhaps, to the design-conscious people who regularly dip into their listings, but could only dream of owning. You never feel lonely living here and our neighbours are great – especially since having a baby 10 months ago, I’ve met so many lovely people in the surrounding flats who all know my daughter’s name and it’s been really special. The apartment is entered through Corten steel gates and wooden screening that shields a front courtyard. The exterior of each complex is featured, along with an informative article about how the building was designed and what its fate has become over time. The only post-war furniture we own is Vitsoe shelving, designed by Dieter Rams in 1960; we have an insane amount of books and records.

Although I don’t own a house myself and that continues to be a distant dream (especially in London), I often feel inspired by how spaces are transformed through colour, art and carefully selected items of furniture. In a fast-moving world, I should like to arouse awareness of duration, intergenerational links, of our social average and long term responsibility as well as of our solidarity.Featuring twenty-one modernist homes and their residents, including the Barbican, the Isokon, Balfron Tower and Park Hill, it provides an overview of the building, architects, historical and political context, and explores, with interviews and contemporary photography, what it's like to live on a modernist estate today.

It specialises in design-led, architecturally intriguing properties from former factories to art deco gems, modernist estates, urban spaces, loft conversions, new-builds and even partnerships with Turner prize-winning architects Assemble. Gibberd, whose father and grandfather were both architects, had also inherited the family interest in buildings. I’ve been interested in Modernist architecture since I moved to the Barbican when I first came to London in the late 1990s,” she tells CR. The Barbican Centre is my favourite place in the whole of London so Barbican Estate remains my dream address, but I also think the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate and Balfron Tower are amazing. In many ways, Orazi’s lockdown project feels like the culmination of her creative interests up until now. It was built during a unique period (the early 1970s) when brand new building materials were exploited with a fair bit of money thrown at them. We have replaced the non-original flooring throughout, so we now have floor tiles in the kitchen based on what Alvar Aalto used in Finland in the 1930s. In 2013, planned proposals for the HS2 railway line led to the demolition of three housing blocks and the loss of 182 homes on the northeastern corner of the estate. However, what particularly illuminates this book is alluded to in the second part of its title the buildings and the people who live in them today. The AP®, CLEP®, College Board®, College-Level Examination Program® are registered trademarks of the College Board, which are not affiliated with, and do not endorse, Modern States Education Alliance™. Berlin will be the hub, but there are Bauhaus buildings all over Germany and the movement’s legacy stretches as far as Chicago, Tel Aviv, São Paulo and Melbourne. Some people think Trellick Tower is scruffy but there’s an amazing team who looks after the building, keeping it clean and well cared for. I appreciate the small things that make the Barbican Estate unique, such as the fact that our rubbish is collected daily from a cupboard beside the front door, also the endless music videos filmed here, the silence and the fact the concrete has a very particular smell.
