When Olivia boards the cruise liner destined for Antarctica, she has no idea the horrors that await her on board. I would never, ever, go to Antartica but I feel such a great fascination for books and tv shows set there. It's just a shame that the way it was executed was not one that I could have appreciated as much as I would have liked to, making for a rather disappointing read, instead. Daarbij brengt ze verrassende wendingen in het verhaal en laat ze je als lezer echt mee puzzelen, naar hoe het verhaal in elkaar zit en wie al deze dingen op zijn of haar geweten heeft. I was underwhelmed by McCulloch's debut thriller, Breathless, but I can't resist thrillers with icy settings - especially when that setting is Antarctica - and I also love a good cruise ship novel, so I had to read Midnight.

She is currently working on her next adult thriller, continuing to draw inspiration from her adventures. When she's gifted a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic cruise, Olivia has never been anywhere so spectacular.

Biography: Amy McCulloch is the Chinese-White author of Breathless, an international bestseller and Waterstones Thriller of the Month selection. She also summited the highest mountain in the Americas, Aconcagua, in -45C and 90kmph winds, and has visited all seven continents. Olivia is delighted to get an invitation to join an exclusive cruise to Antarctica with her art representative boyfriend Aaron.

There are hints as to the identity of the source of the danger, but there’s a pleasing number of potential suspects. Midnight is an utterly addictive novel by Amy McCulloch, which takes place in one of the remotest parts of the world, Antarctica, on the maiden voyage of a recently refurbished luxury cruise liner. Amy McCulloch definitely made me feel as though I was there on the cruise ship, especially through her descriptions, when she is describing how the ship has recently been refurbished, and she brilliantly makes you feel the danger closing in. Mystery and characterization are underwhelming, the heroine is unremarkable, and the art element felt shoe-horned in. In fact, anything to do with the art world, or even art heists would regularly be a huge turnoff, on account of how dry and uninteresting a topic it usually is, and this one was no exception. The liked the cast of characters, although there were a few too many extras dipping in and out from the sidelines. I read many, many thrillers and don't generally find it too much of a challenge to work out the plot. The art element about the dead artist who painted and drew Antarctica as his muse and the way the cruise was as much about his exquisite work that wealthy bidders were there to get the original and see the other prints on display while cruising the settings. Saying that though, the last part of the story was interesting and pretty thrilling, so I’ll definitely give this author another chance. But when her boyfriend misses the ship and suspicious things start to happen to people on board, it seems like the water might be the least of Olivia's worries .
