Description

The illustrations are full of warmth, colour and joy, beautifully echoing the excitement of discovery and adventure.

This poignant tale acknowledges the sadness of losing a loved one, but also celebrates the pleasure of remembering those who have touched our lives. The children begin the sequence of learning by exploring a dusty memory box from the attic which contains objects linked to Grandad’s memories of his time in the campervan with Gramps. That leaves the child's role (and there is no mention of parents, or even that Grandad and Gramps had children) as brackets to the piece, only becoming an active part of the story at the end. I love that it is an intergenerational story in which a grandchild and grandfather are just loving spending time together.Still, there is a wholesome gentility to every page, of enjoying every minute, even in memory, of growing sweet cherries in the garden, and of filling a home with mementos and stories. Waterstones Children's Book Award Winner and British Book Awards Nibbies Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year 2023! Inspired by these tales, the narrator encourages Grandad to fix up the van, and the two take it for a road trip to the beach.

It is clear that the love of grandad's life (Gramps)' s a man but the book never feels the need to state this in an overt way, it is lovely how this fact is just a natural part of the story. A long time ago, Grandad and Gramps spent many happy days travelling the world together in a camper van. As they look through photo albums, he talks fondly about how they travelled the world together in their beloved pink campervan. An effective tool for teaching empathy, and the intergenerational bond at the story's center is a heartstrings puller. Caregivers, especially older ones, may see this book as an opportunity to talk about departed loved ones and introduce their happy memories to a younger generation-many a family will find themselves pulling out photo albums to relate their own origin stories.
